Meet the Pilots: Team Pilot SFPV - by GETPROPSMAN.com

Recently taking 3rd place at the RCX Race in Costa Mesa, CA, GETPRROPSMAN Team Pilot SFPV is also well known for his YouTube build videos and warehouse races. Skilled racer and freestyler, we took this opportunity to learn more about SFPV.

GPM: What got you started in FPV?

SPFV: I used to go watch my best friend Alex fly his TBS Disco Pro all over San Francisco. It was a blast seeking out new locations, filming shot and then getting home and editing videos. I loved the whole process that was involved in putting together a short video clip for Youtube. We had a great time doing this, but I was always yearning for the chance to fly. He wasn't going to let me fly a $2000 quad with no experience, so I bought a husband x4 and started practicing. After a couple weeks, Alex came home from work and showed me the Blackout 220 he has ordered online. As soon as I saw this I knew I had to have one.

GPM: What was your first build and what are you running now?

SPFV: I ended up ordering a knock off ZMR250 and put on 12amp afro esc's, MRM 1806 2300kv motors and a lot of other obsolete equipment. There were wires everywhere! Thing ziptied to the frame, including the flight controller (I know...I know...). I had a huge 400mw vtx that took up half the space inside the body and an x8r receiver that was also massive. Looking back, it's amazing that thing flew so well!

Now I'm flying multiple quads. All of my quads have the same "brains" just different power trains. I do this so that if one quad breaks, I can swap the vtx or the receiver over from another quad if I have to. This way I only need to order 1 of each part as a back up because it will fit on my 4, 5 or 6 inch quad.

GPM: Do you prefer Free Style or Races, and why?
SPFV: I have no preference. I enjoy both equally. Freestyle is fun when you are by yourself or exploring a new spot, whereas racing is more enjoyable with a group of friends. I spend my time training equally between freestyle and racing. They sort of go hand in hand. If you're doing freestyle and flying through a building, that's very similar to flying through a gate on a tight track. Honestly if you're good at racing you're most likely going to be good at freestyle with a bit of practice.
GPM: What's your most memorable moment so far?
SPFV: I'd have to say the IDRA California Cup was an amazing trip! We got to fly down to LA in a small private plane and land at the local airport right next to the race. I was responsible for designing the track and it was amazing to see people have such a good time on a track that I created. It was very rewarding. We had a great time down there.
GPM: Where do you see this hobby/sport going in the next few years? More e-sports or USA National broadcast similar to the NBA, NASCAR, etc...

SPFV: I am confident that drone racing will be on ESPN2 at some point this year. If they show bowling, college softball and little league world series why not drone racing?! I think Drone Worlds will get some world wide live TV coverage. Hopefully I'll be there!

GPM: What's your next big race you're planning to attend?

SPFV: The qualifying season is just getting under way for the Drone Nationals, which will funnel into the Drone Worlds. The next big race is at the Propsman team warehouse, which will be a qualifier for the Nationals, as well as a world ranked event. We have some serious competition coming out, including a few DRL pilots and other notable Bay Area legends.

GPM: What props do you like most and why?
SPFV: DAL props all day! They're durable, reliable and the colors look amazing!
GPM: Who's your favorite pilot, other than yourself?
SPFV: LAZD. He's insane. Not many people know him just yet, but they will soon. I get to fly with him a lot and he's always pushing our crew to fly faster. He borders on the line between control and out of control like no one I've ever seen.

We hoped you enjoyed this Meet the Pilots segment. We will be posting more soon! Please leave comments or suggestions!
